Sell Your Car And Travel.

Here we are again…

It’s creeping into the wee hours of the morning and instead of packing for the plane I need to get on in a few hours, I’m sitting here thinking…

I have over 24 hours of travel ahead of me, but when I land, I will be catching the tail end of summer in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Australia. Needless to say, I’m stoked. However, there is one thing bothering me…

I travel a ton. I feel very fortunate for this and I certainly do not take it for granted, however I work my ass off to make it happen. The first thing I hear from most people in response to my latest destination is “Lucky!” or some sort of complaint along the lines of “I wish I could go” This bums me out. So here I am giving away my secrets in hopes to help you understand a little better how you can be the one leaving instead of the one wishing they could go!

1. Sell Your Car And Travel!

Yeah yeah, I get it, you need that thing. But do you need that payment? or that metric ass-load of debt??

At this time last year, The Fiscal Times reported that us Americans had $886 billion in outstanding auto loans. That’s sneaking up on 1 TRILLION DOLLARS and is up nearly 23 percent from the same period two years ago. (that’s a lot of cash to pay to not have!) AND The average loan amount also hit its highest level on record at $28,381, that is up more than $950 from the previous year. The percentage of new vehicles purchased with financing increased over the previous year to 84 percent!!

Soooooo based on all that fancy math, it is very likely that you do not own your car, and that you pay some suit at a bank every month to drive it.

One last bit of nerd facts: Last year the average new-car loan payment hit a record $482 (with a 4.56% interest according to Experian Automotive)

So let’s assume you’re below average on your car payment and you pay $350 a month. THIS DOESN’T MAKE SENSE TO ME!

Here is where it gets good… I haven’t had a car payment since 2003.

that’s 13 years, or 156 months payment free! Assuming I’m below average on my payment, that leaves me with an extra $55,000 in my pocket (that’s a lot of flights)

Now bear with me, you’re thinking yeah that’s a bunch of boring calculus what is your point?!

HERE IT IS!  Sell that car that you do not own, and buy something affordable, with cash, that will get you where you need to go! Once you’ve done that, simply put that money that you were throwing away every month into a separate account, and when it hits the amount you need, buy that ticket and go!  Why do you even have that car you can’t afford?

From the words of the great Tyler Durden “Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war… Our great depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won’t. We’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.”

Do you really need that car? Or are you “buying shit we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like.” — George Carlin

My round-trip flight to Australia (with all taxes, fees, and visa included) was $1,263.66. Using my method and saving a car payment of $350 a month would take only 3.5 months! and most trips will be much cheaper than this.

2: Buy Experiences Not Things.

One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation, buying things might make you happy, but only for a while before you adapt to them.

My only hope with all this is to make you re-examine what it is that you want, and help you find a way to achieve that.
Like I said in the “Neptune” video:

If you say you want something but you’re not willing to do what it takes to make that thing happen, you don’t really want that thing.

Now get out there and see all those places you want to before it’s too late! I’m off to go jump off some waterfalls and pet some kangaroos!

Bye!
Tim
