What do you want to be when you grow up?
I always wanted to be an astronaut or doctor or explorer.
These days I don’t give too much thought to space travel. I’m not saying I wouldn’t go, I’d drop everything in a heartbeat for the chance to go to space. I watch movies like Interstellar, The Martian, and even Gravity and yearn for that extraterrestrial experience.
I think I can die happy without going to space.
Ask me the question again. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be as loving as my mom. I want to be as thoughtful as my friend Dan. I want to be as compassionate as Jesus. I want to have a heart for justice like Ghandi. I want to be as brilliant as Hawking. I want to be as genuine as my buddy Chris. I want to be as kind as my wife, Angie. I want to be as peaceful as that guy I met at that party seven years ago… Paul, maybe?
When I grow up, I don’t want to be grown up. When I grow up, I want to keep growing, keep changing, keep becoming more and more like the people I love, respect and admire.
The thing I’m slowly learning is that what I do is less important than who I become.
The more I try to achieve, the more I buy, the more places I go, I realize that happiness and fulfillment isn’t found by consuming more. It isn’t found in taking more and more for myself, but in slowly and thoughtfully giving up what I have for the people around me.
Yes, go do. Yes, go explore. Push yourself, stretch and become the most you can. Go to space if you can! But know that in the end, it’s not about staying true to some arbitrary goal or success you want for yourself. It’s about staying true to you. Stay true to the best you, the one you’ve always wanted to be.
